Using your 3G phone as a USB modem

January 4, 2008

I actually got this idea from a colleague at work, OJ, who owns a Nokia 3G phone — the model escapes me. In any case, I just realized that you can use your 3G mobile phone as a USB modem to connect to the internet. Yey! You can blog anywhere you want with your laptop especially if you're not picking up any wifi networks. :)

Must-haves before connecting:

  1. USB cable

  2. Installation software CD - very important!!! This contains drivers for the mobile phone as well as some other transfer wizards.

  3. Active subscription with a service provider i.e. SMART, Globe or Sun Cellular. (Preferrably SMART (lowest rates on internet browsing, Php10/30mins.) Your phone must be set up already for GPRS and/or 3G.

Steps:

  1. Install the software CD first. Follow instructions on LCD screen. For Nokia phones, you need to install Nokia PC Suite. For Motorola phones, you'd need to install Motorola Mobile Phone Tools.

  2. Connect your mobile phone to the computer via USB. Make sure that you are in a 3G area and that you have enough credits for internet access.

  3. Once the computer and the software detects your mobile, click on Connect to the Internet on your mobile software. It should get you connected. :)

See? Easy as one-two-three! :D

My wife has the LG ku250 and she is running the PC suite internet kit software that came with the phone , for some strange reason after having to reinstall XP she now can not connect to the net , She reinstalled the software adn when she tries to connect she is getting a message saying ” a connection to the remote computer could not be established the port has been closed ” now I can do alot of things with software but I am back in the USA at work and wont be back with her for a few months . I know the thing was working because I was using it and I cant find anything on line as far as support, called LG and just as I thought , No one knows anything . We had to take the lap top and CD to Smart just to get the 3 or 4 settings that they should have giving to her when she subcribed . I had to show the guy how to install the software . I havent had this problem so I am not sure what to tell her to do . has anyone had this problem using the LG KU250 and the related internet software ….. please email me at med2521@comcast.net

How did your wife reinstall XP? There are two ways, a clean reinstall and a dirty reinstall. A clean reinstall is where you reformat the whole computer’s HD and a dirty reinstall is where you just overwrite the existing operating system. If your wife did a dirty reinstall, it is possible that it might have corrupted a couple of things in the registry.

BTW, is this the exact error that you’re getting? no error codes?

Will CC you this comment in your email. :)

Hi! I found your post very useful and I just tried doing the same strat last night w/ my SE 3G phone and laptop. It worked! To my amazement.

I’m a Sun sub and I know that my place in QC doesn’t hav their 3G site yet so am wondering if the internet connection was dependent just on Sun signal - and not on the availability of a 3G site? Pls explain.

Also, would you knw how the rates for internet browsing for Sun & Globe? TY :)

Lots people pass the duty to expert resume writers because they don’t have the ability to compose a good resume that is the cause why customers
need to
resume writers, but such customers like author don’t do that. Thank you for the text. Very perfect facts about this topic.
